In your own words, explain what The Giver means when he says that he will help the community to become "whole."

  1. There are many ways of what the Giver means when he says that he will help the community to becoming "whole."

First of all, The Giver knows that most people in his and community, which is the same as Jonas's community are out of their mind because they release the newborn and the old by killing them. This violent way causes Jonas to worry, and be filled with melancholy. Both The Giver and Jonas think that this is a crazy idea, and they want to put it to a stop. They both have experienced seeing it in a painful way, but The Giver didn't want to see the precious girl inject herself as she preferred to. Here is an example. In page 151, it says, "His father loaded the carton containing the body into the chute and gave it a shove. Bye Bye little guy, Jonas heard his father say before he left the room. Then the screen went blank. The Giver turned to him. Quite calmly, he related, "When the speaker notified me that Rosemary had applied for release, they turned on the tape to show me the process." This painful process makes Jonas feel very sad and upset about how his own father could do such a thing to a precious child. To The Giver, it must have been a worse feeling because Rosemary was his blood- related child.

Second of all, Jonas wonders how Fionna will feel like if she knows that the elderly also have to be released. He knows that she loves the old, and takes care of them. In page 153, it says, "Do they kill the old too? Yes, it's true. And what about Fionna? She loves the old!" It seems like even for a friend of his, Jonas cares about how she will feel in this situation. Also, in that same page, it says, "LIsten to me, Jonas. They can't help it. They know nothing." This means that the people in the community do not think that what they are doing is wrong. In fact, they think it is right.

These can be some ways of what The Giver means when he says that he will help the community to become "whole."

    1. I disagree that release is the thing that makes the communtiy not "whole", I think that the fact that there is no love is.

  2. The Giver says he wants the community to be "whole" meaning that they can become one real, loving, community by helping them understand feelings and actually letting them express their feelings."Their attention would turn to the overwhelming task of bearing memories themselves. The Giver would help them." This quote shows that the Giver is going to help the community understand memories of love, war, and pain to bring all of the members of the community closer together. "'We know that they once felt things like pride, and sorrow, and-'" This quote shows that the Giver is ready to return the emotions to the community that were once theirs. The Giver wants the community to become "whole" meaning closer together and feeling love.

  3. When The Giver says he will help the community become a whole, he means it will become complete. One example of completion is colors. "'But I want them!' Jonas said angrily. 'It isn't fair that nothing has color!'" What Jonas means by this is that its not fair that the community does not see color, which would make it more complete because color makes things beautiful. Another important example of becoming "whole" or complete is emotions, such as The Giver's and Jonas' favorite, love. "There were cries of delight. The hugged one another......'What did you percieve?' The Giver asked. 'Warmth,'..and happiness. And-let me think. Family.'...'Love', The Giver told him." With these strong emotions, the community could become "whole" because they truly love eachother and know what powerful emotions like Love feel like.

  4. The Giver says that he will help the community become "whole". He says that because he knows that when the community receives the memories that Jonas had, they will all be scared, confused, and it will be chaos. He will help them become a community again and he will probably help them understand and control the memories how he helped Jonas. "His father loaded the carton containing the body into the chute and gave it a shove" that quote shows that they do not have feelings because they killed a newborn just because it was smaller than his twin, so The Giver will also help them have and control feelings. When Jonas asks their parents "Do you love me?" and they say that the word "love" has become meaningless, Jonas sees that they can't feel love, so the Giver will help them understand the memory of the family that was his favorite memory. That is what The Giver meant when he said that he would help the community become a whole.

  5. The Giver says he wants the community to be "whole". I think that this means that he wants their community to be what they think that "Elsewhere" is like. He wants them to feel feelings and to be like what their community used to be. He wants them to have to deal with Jonas's memories. Once that happens the Giver will have to help them with their situation. "Their attention would turn to the overwhelming task of bearing memories themselves. The Giver would help them." This quote shows that the Giver will help the community learn how to deal with the memories of love, war, pain, and happiness. The Giver thinks that this will bring the community together and help them to become "whole". I think this is what the Giver meant when he said that he wanted the community to become "whole".

  6. The Giver says that he wants the community to be "whole", meaning that the Giver wants everything as one. For example everyone should have memories that makes them feel, like love. When Jonas ask's his parents " do love me." His parents said that love was meaningless, but they do enjoy him. But if they had the memory of love they would love him. Everyone should have the opportunity to feel. Another example about how everything is should be as one is color. Everyone should be allowed to see color. If everyone had the ability to see color Jonas's world would be a different, because if you see, feeling will come with it. Another example is life. Everyone should be as one so no killing people when they are twins. Everyone should have a chance at life! This will help make the community as one! when the Giver says he wants the community to be "whole" he means as one.

  7. In the book, the giver says that he will help the community to become “whole.” What he means by that is that he wants the community to work together, not keep secrets from each other, and be more connected with each other. As of then, Jonas and the Giver knew a lot of things that the rest of the community doesn’t know. When Jonas travels elsewhere, the community will receive those memories. In the book it says, "Their attention would turn to the overwhelming task of bearing memories themselves. The Giver would help them." This shows that the Giver will help the community face the tough memories from the past and connect with them. Another way to make the community become “whole” is to make sure nothing is missing from it. Right now, the community is missing color, climate, and many other things. In the book it says, "'But I want them!' Jonas said angrily. 'It isn't fair that nothing has color!'" Jonas wants the community to be complete and filled with amazing things, so it can become “whole.” The Giver means many things when he says that he will help the community to become “whole.”

  8. What the Giver means when he says that he will help the community become "whole" is that he will help the community take in the memories released from Jonas and try to help the community not go in a state of panic. If the Giver did not do this, the community would be out of control, no one would be in charge, and the community could be in total chaos. The community would be in pieces, but the Giver would put those pieces together. What I mean is that he will tell the community that its better the way with pain, love and happiness. It will be a better place and that trying so hard to make a paradise comes with harshness and cruelty. He will tell the community a paradise is not possible without consequences. Over time, the community will begin to change. They will begin to understand the harshness of their community and become "normal". This all took about 2 years, which Jonas is Leader of is village/community. As a gift to him, the community sent s boat full of all the Givers books and they are stored in his office. Jonas lives a peaceful life and he makes his village a sanctuary where everyone is welcome. He retires his job as the Leader of the village at age 20 and does something he loves, he becomes the village librarian. At age 24, meets Kira and marries her ( more information of how Jonas met Kira in book 3 and to know Kira's lifestyle and community and general info read book 2 also) and they have 2 happy children. They live a peaceful life, much better than what Jonas's old community was trying to accomplish. Gabe, throughout his life in the village is a strong but silly boy. He was always the boy who got in trouble. The loving and funny boy he was, he was also curious and longed to know of his parenthood. Jonas kept on explaining the rules of birthmothership to Gabe back in the old days when community that Jonas grew up in was in sameness though the community was not 100% "normal". Alas, this is the long story of how Jonas and the Giver brought change to the community, made it whole, and the new life that Jonas is living in.

  9. The Giver means many things when he says the community will become whole. One thing he means is that the community won't be afraid of change anymore so that they can make the community how they think it should be. They would be making decisions as a community instead of just elders. Also I think he means that he will introduce pain, love and feelings to them because he knows they will be happier if they had love. The giver would try to bring back the things in the memories since Jonas's will be released into the community. I also think he means that he will try (if it's even possible) to get rid of sameness because he says that no one feels anything or knows anything because of sameness. He will also try to help people who are scared of the memories by explaining that pain goes along with love. You can't have them together. Those are some things that the giver means by saying that he will make the community whole.

  10. The Giver means a lot of things when he says the community will become a whole. One of the things he means is that the people will have to feel. Although they had the evening sharing of feelings they never truly felt. They never felt the true pain and joy of life. Jonas leaving will make the people have to bear the feelings because no new receiver could be chosen since the oldest person in the community who can see beyond ,besides the giver and Jonas is 6 ,so she needs to at least be 12 to fill in the job. Forcing the people to bare the memories. And the side affect to that is that the people must bond (or in other words become a whole). This is my opinion on what the giver meant when he said the community will become a whole.

  11. In the novel, The Giver says that he will help the community to become "whole." He means that he wants the community to be complete and work together. on page 154, paragraph 7, it says, “‘it’s true that it has been this way for what seems forever. But the memories tell us that it has not always been. People felt things once. You and I have been part of that, so we know. We know that they felt things like pride, and sorrow...” This states that The Giver knows that it has not been the same forever, and he might wish to change that, by bringing colors and emotions back to the people. The Giver also wants the people to be more connected with each other more, such as, not forcing them to lie, interacting with each other more, and to have love and compassion for each other. On page 153, paragraph 3, it says, “‘Listen to me, Jonas. They can’t help it. They know nothing.’...It’s the way they live. It’s the life that was created for them...’It’s what he was told to do, and he knows nothing else.’” This states that the people are all empowered to lie, and they have no true feelings, so they know nothing about the actuality of the circumstances. Their lives were all created with no real feelings or understanding of their Assignments, so they knew nothing more than they were told. When the community is complete and working together, it’ll become the community that The Giver described as “whole”.

  12. When the giver says he must help the community become a “whole”, he means he must help the people who have the bad memories. He means this because when the people receive the bad memories they will be sad and not know how to deal with it so the giver will help them. The Giver feels that the community is falling apart so he wants to fix it. He also doesn’t want anyone in the community to have any ideas about starting a war. He has to see these people quick before they start a war and the community turns upside down. Since no one in the community has ever committed a crime he does not want mayhem to break out. That is what the giver means by helping the community become a “whole”.

  13. The Giver said that he will help the community to become “whole”. The Giver meant that the people in the communities are able to make their own decisions. They can make the community structured the way they want it to be. The Elders won’t make all the decisions and the citizens will have a say. "Their attention would turn to the overwhelming task of bearing memories themselves. The Giver would help them." The Giver will show them pain but, he will also show them love. The pain will make the citizens feel sadder but, they will know how love feels and will be much happier with the freedom. The Giver wants the community to be like what the people living in the community think what “elsewhere” is. The citizens will be more caring for each other and can express their feelings more. The Giver wanted to help the community be a “whole” by bringing back memories of the past.

  14. The Giver means several things when he says that he will help the community to become whole. The Community is very structured, with little free will and choice. The citizens of The Community are unable to live full lives because of this. “‘But now that I can see colors, at least sometimes, I was just thinking: what if we could hold up things that were bright red, or bright yellow, and he could choose? Instead of the Sameness.’” A world without color and choice of color is an incomplete world. Sameness seems to have no benefits at all. It is a gaping hole that needs to be lovingly filled by The Giver. Also, The Community is deprived of true ♡love♡. “‘Do you understand why it’s inappropriate to use a word like ‘love’?’ Mother asked.” Love is one of the greatest and most powerful feelings in the world. People should have a right to feel passionate and happy about anything they want to, and not to live in a place that is lacking deep emotions. The Community must have love to be whole. The Giver doesn’t mean that half of the roads in The Community are missing and that he needs to fix them, he means that he must restore full lives and true feelings to The Community’s people. Although The Community seems like a perfect world, it is actually a dystopia in disguise. The Giver means many things when he says that he will help the community become whole.

  15. The giver will help the community become whole again. The community was fine working together and living together before the memories of jonas were spread through out everyone. After they are spread out through everyone the people are gonna try to comfort them selves. Also keep to them selves. The giver is going to unite the people and help them through it. Eventually they will become whole like before. Living together and working together. This is what the giver meant when he said he would help the community become whole.

  16. When The Giver says he wants the community to be whole he means that he wants to eliminate the bad memories, and bring good things such as love, and help the community be like it was long ago where there was more freedom . One way The Giver might make the community be whole is by trying to bring back the memory of love. “They hugged one another. ‘What did you perceive?’ The Giver asked. ‘Warmth and...... happiness’. Another way The Giver would probably make the community whole is by possibly explaining what color is. These are examples on how The Giver means by “whole.”

  17. The giver will help the community become whole again. Everything and everyone was fine up until the point where memories were past through the community (through Jonas). Since everything isn’t the way its supposed to be in the community, all of the people in the community are trying to fix things themselves. So, The Giver is trying to bring the community back together and make them act as one. He is making them “whole” again. This is what he means when he says : “becoming whole again”.

  18. When The Giver says that he will help the community become whole, he means that he wants everyone working together as one group. The whole community experiences sameness, therefore just listening to the rules and not standing up. Personally, I think that The Giver means that he wants the community to join as one "whole" and stand up so everyone can get whats right. For example, people should be able to choose their spouses and how many kids they want or if they even want kids at all. They should also be able to choose their jobs and not have such strict rules. If there is a set of twins, one should not be released because he is smaller. I think that life in this community isn't fair because everyone is treated the same. Everyone has to have the same of everything. In conclusion, I think that The Giver can help the community become whole by having everyone stand up and fight for whats right and fair.

  19. The Giver means many things when he says that he will help the community become “whole.” One thing he meant was he needs to help people understand the memories with the community. The community is so oblivious to pain and feelings and many, many more things that they can’t truly understand each other and other things. This will help build a better community that can supply everyones’ needs. Another thing the Giver meant was that he will learn people how to make their own choices. The council has made all the choices in the past , but people need to understand and do what is best for them to be successful in life and not have someone choose their every move. Because the Giver will give the community the memories, the community will understand the peoples’ point of view because they share the same memories, so they know where the person logic behind his decision is coming from. This is what the Giver meant when he said that he will help the community become “whole.”

  20. When the Giver says he will help the community become “whole”, he meant that he would help the community become a community full of “actual people”. What I meant by “actual people” is that people aren’t actually people unless you have memories and actual feelings. If you don’t have any actual feelings, you’re no better than a zombie. For example, on pg. 150, it said,”He killed it! My father killed it! Jonas said to himself, stunned at what he was realizing. He continued to stare at the screen numbly.” and then on Pg. 151, it read,”"Bye-bye, little guy," Jonas heard his father say before he left the room. Then the screen went blank.” This shows that Jonas’s father, who does the worst job, (even though he doesn’t know because he probably doesn’t know what death is,) does not have any real feeling or sympathy because he does not have any memories and he does not have any real feelings. than the theory is, that other people do not have any feelings, too. But when Jonas leaves the community, all the memories will leave him and go to the people of the communities instead. So when they get the feelings and memories, they will become “whole”. That is what the Giver means when he says that he will help the community become whole.

  21. “Towards the end of the novel, The Giver says that he will help the community to become whole, if Jonas escapes and leaves the community behind. Being the Receiver of Memories-in-training, Jonas is expected to receives all sorts of memories, positive and negative. If he leaves, then he is leaving all members of his community to deal with the burden of these. The Receiver has always been responsible for processing and storing all memories, and this shields the community. To me, this means that if Jonas leaves, the community definitely will be burdened and overwhelmed by the memories he's received.
As a result, this will be so traumatizing for everyone, that all community members will need to come together and share the burden and grief of the good and bad memories in order to survive. The Giver states (ch20, p.155-156), "If you get away, if you get beyond, if you get to Elsewhere, it will mean that the community has to bear the burden themselves of the memories you had been holding for them. I think they can, and that they will acquire some wisdom."
In conclusion, I believe that the community will unite, although the situation is bittersweet, as the Giver has to stay behind as well and he and Jonas are forced to say good-bye forever, as well as Jonas and his family.”-----Joshua B. Lewis

  22. When the Giver says he will help the community become whole he means he will spread the memories. If he spreads the memories everyone in the community will know the same history, and become "one" or whole. He means that there will be "real" people with real memories and feelings and won't release people for no reason. One example is on page 150 when Jonas yells "He killed it!' My father killed it!'". His father killed that baby for no reason and if the community had real people they wouldn't kill people because of their size. That is what the Giver means when he says he will help the community become whole.

  23. The giver means he will help the community overcome all the memories that Jonas let go when he escaped. The community won’t know how to deal with the memories and ask the giver for help and guidance. The giver will obviously help them. Even though some memories are happy, the community has still never experienced them and might be scared. The giver will tell them how to deal with them. The community will also have to deal with the painful memories. This will be very hard on them, but the giver will give great wisdom. The community will take the givers advice. Then after about a year or so the memories will soon start to fade away and the community will go back too the way it was and become “whole”

  24. When The Giver says that he will hep the community become "whole", he was referring to his plan on changing the community. Since Jonas began his training, he began to realize that his community isn't so perfect as he thought it was. And soon he embarked on the idea of changing the community. He and The Giver made a plan on how they could take the community away from it's Sameness. Their plan was for Jonas to escape the community, and when he did all his memories that he received from The Giver would escape from his mind, and the whole community will be able to experience them. Jonas had many happy memories but he also had terrible, and painful ones. When Jonas would leave the community they'll all be in chaos. Not knowing what to do, with all of the overwhelming feelings, and memories. And that was their plan all along. For the community to experience the memories so they could change, and escape from the Sameness, and giving the freedom of choice. But they needed help from somebody. And The Giver was going to do that buy giving them guidance, altering them into knew type of people. And that is what The Giver ment by helping the community become whole.

  26. There are different ways to explain what The Giver means when he says that he will help the community to become “whole”. One way I think is that since his community is in sameness, know one is carrying the memories except The Giver which means know one besides Jonas has the same feelings or any feelings that The Giver has. It is now his chance to give all of those feelings and memories to the whole community so they can connect and feel different needed emotions. The Giver also wants to help the community become “whole” is to show and tell them how much pain and sorrow it really is to release and punish people in the community for pleasure.

When the Giver says that he will help the community to become “whole”, he means that he will help the community bring back all the things that are missing to become one big loving, caring family. For one thing, there used to be color. “ ‘Once, back in the time of the memories, everything had a shape and size, the way things still do, but they also had a quality called color.’... ‘Why did colors disappear?’ The Giver shrugged. ‘Our people made that choice, the choice to go to Sameness.’ ” Unfortunately the people can not see color anymore unless it is somehow brought back, which is what the Giver is hoping to do. Before sameness, people also used to have real feelings such as love and pain. “ ‘Love,’ The Giver told him. Jonas repeated it. ‘Love’ It was a word and concept new to him... ‘I liked the feeling of love,’ he confessed. Feelings aren’t part of Jonas’s community anymore because the people decided to take it away. When Jonas goes on his journey out of the community, all the memories that the giver has given to him, full of both happiness and pain, will be released into the community, and the giver will help the community survive the memories, especially the bad ones. “Their attention would turn to the overwhelming task of bearing the memories themselves. the Giver would help them.” Both Jonas and the Giver are hoping that after the memories are brought upon the people, everything will go back the way it was before sameness, before climate control. Once the people survive the memories, the community will become augmented. Everything will be the way Jonas and the Giver have dreamed of. The Giver hopes to help the community survive the bed memories and be filled with lots of new knowledge from the past.

  28. When the Giver says he is going to help the community to become “whole”, he wants to fill a gap that was taken away by Sameness. So things like love, emotion, and the idea that differences can be good and beneficial. Using the memories, he will show the community members that what they are living in can be changed into a world where people can make choices that will lead to the better, rather than to the worst. The Giver wants to make the community members understand that they could be doing so much more. Jonas enjoyed the memories and they changed his mind. They could change somebody else's. Although he can’t transmit the memories, Jonas’s escaped ones will show the community members what they could be experiencing, therefore letting the community members’ souls become “whole”.

  29. The Giver means 3 things when he says that he will help make the community a "whole". The first and most important meaning of the community becoming a whole is the knowledge of love and happiness. When Jonas first experiences with love or happiness he feel that everyone should experience it and it will bring families closer together, or in other words making them a whole. The second meaning of whole that the giver is hinting at is choice. This will make the community a whole because with choice you can pick your spouse or job giving you pride and a real family. The Meaning of whole that the giver is talking about is letting people learn the hardship of life. The learning of hardship of life will bring the community closer because they will share their pain with one another and understand each other better.

  30. The Giver said that he will help the community to become “whole”.what he meant by this is that, the people will get the memories back and will be able to make their own decisions. And return the community into what it used to be before sameness took over. The citizens would have a say in everything and the elders wouldn't have as much control. "Their attention would turn to the overwhelming task of bearing memories themselves. The Giver would help them." The Giver will show them what pain is, but he will also show them love. Even though the citizens will then all have to carry some of the pain, the knowing of love, color, and happiness will get them through it. The Giver wanted to help the community be a “whole” by bringing back memories of the past.

  31. In the book, The Giver said that he will help the community to become "whole." By this, I think The Giver meant the he would help make the community more complete. He would help them get used to the memories of real pain and suffering, colors, and all the other memories that the community would have to face. He would teach them about love and real feelings and slowly make them learn what they had forgotten. The Giver would be there for them the way he had been there for Jonas. He would help them understand and help them feel comfortable in the new life they were living and make them "whole."
