Open Response #2 Due Tuesday, June 4th

•Create a one paragraph answer using a claim (thesis), evidence, reasoning, quotes, and a closing sentence.
•Respond to the posts of two other students.  This will explain why you agree/disagree with an idea and/or creating a conversation that adds onto a thought or idea.

Jonas has already shown intelligence, integrity, and courage, and he is expected to learn wisdom.  Give examples of the way Jonas displays each of these four qualities during his training.

  1. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom during his training many times. According to The Giver he has much intelligence. "'Before Sameness. Before Climate Control,' Jonas added. The man laughed. 'You receive well, and learn quickly.'" Learning anything quickly is a sign of intelligence. He is also integrityly enough to ask all of the questions he has to the Giver, thereby being honest. He is also courageous enough to ask where the pain was, which some people may have just said nothing and hoped there was none, so he is also being brave. He becomes wisdomic after a couple weeks of training, knowing what and what not to do. those are some ways Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom during his training.

  2. Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom during training with The Giver. An example of Jonas's intelligence in the training is his knowledge on things others in the community might not recognize. "'Sunshine,' he said aloud, opening his eyes. This shows wisdom because if there is climate control, its hard to experience sunshine, making Jonas intelligent. "To have the power to turn the speaker off?" This quote shows Jonas generally makes good law abiding choices for his community, showing integrity. "'I'm brave. I really am.'" This shows Jonas's courage to take on a painful memory that you'd have to have courage to be able to ask for pain. The last trait Jonas shows is wisdom. "'I think it's what you call seeing beyond,' he said." This shows wisdom because Jonas didn't even know what seeing beyond was, but yet, he understood the idea of it, which shows wisdom. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training with the Giver.

Jonas showed intelligence by everyone being “Aware that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school day.” Being a top student shows that hes very smart. Jonas showed integrity when the only time he did something bad was “hoarding an apple”. He follows the rules but made one bad descision. Jonas showed courage when the plane flew over the community.”He had been frightened then”. He was scared but kept it inside and was strong on the out side. He shows wisdom by “having the capacity to see beyond”. He saw that the crowd changed some how. He sees things no one else sees and that makes him have wisdom. Jonas has displayed 4 special qualities and will continue to display them throughout his training

  5. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom during his training. Jonas shows intelligence by being "a top student". This shows that Jonas is very smart. Jonas shows integrity by committing minor transgressions but always showing up for chastisement. "'Jonas has, like all of us, committed minor transgressions.' She smiled at him. 'We expect that. We hoped, also, that he would present himself promptly for chastisement, and he has always done so.'" Jonas showed courage when The Giver was in pain. Jonas offered to take the memories that caused The Giver pain even though he knew that it would be painful. "'What is it that makes you suffer so much? If you gave some of it to me, maybe your pain would be less.'" This shows that Jonas is very brave. Jonas shows wisdom by receiving all the memories. This makes him learn more about things in the past and become more wise. He learns to see colors more clearly and he experiences pain. This is how Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom during his training with The Giver.

  6. "Throughout chapters 13-15, Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom during his training. These characteristics are key to Jonas becoming the new Receiver; he is expected to possess these traits. Jonas shows his intelligence each time he meets with the Giver, by consistently asking insightful questions and reflecting on the answers, and applying it all to his life and the community: “what if people were allowed to choose their own mates or jobs?” (ch13, p.98). Jonas shows integrity by not divulging his newfound memories. For example, although Jonas perceives color, he keeps it a secret even though he wants to tell his friends and family. He almost does tell Asher (p 99) as he tells Asher to look at the geraniums and tries to transmit a memory to him, but in the end shrugs it off to his friend. Jonas shows courage (ch13, p.107) as he asks the Giver to transfer some “pain” to him, and the Giver proceeds to do so, leading into Jonas’s sled accident with the broken leg( ch14). Also, Jonas helps (ch15) the Giver receive pain, as the memory of war is transmitted to him. Jonas displays wisdom at home (p115) as he offers to have Gabriel sleep in his room with him to comfort him. Here, Jonas used a good memory that he had received and knew that it could help Gabriel. No one told him to do this. Jonas just knew that this was the right thing to do, as his parents were becoming exhausted caring for fussy Gabriel at night. In summary, Jonas shows the above characteristics needed to succeed and eventually become the new Receiver, just in these 3 chapters alone."---Joshua B. Lewis

  7. Jonas has showed intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training. One way he showed intelligence was when he was being a top student. This shows intelligence because a top student means that he/she is very smart and always is on task. Jonas shows integrity when he is willing to ask questions, this is being honest since he is telling the truth about his concerns, also being courages of not being scared to ask questions. He also shows wisdom when The Giver gives memories to him. This makes him more wise and understand color better. These are examples on how Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisd

  8. There are many ways Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, courage, and is also showing that he is learning wisdom. Jonas showed wisdom when he said too the giver that family looked more complete with love. He saw that fake feelings his family had, and liked the look of love. That shows great wisdom. One way Jonas showed courage when the giver was in pain and was going to send Jonas away but then Jonas said “ Unless there is something I can do to help” That shows great courage, taking the pain. Jonas showed integrity when he got nervous when the giver turned the speaker off. He was so surprised, he had always followed such harsh rules that he was astonished when someone broke one. This shows great integrity. Jonas shows intelligence when he asks what if they made the blocks for little kids colors, so they could pick one from another. Too think of this idea in Jonas’s community must mean he is really thinking, and hard thinking is one way of showing intelligence.

  9. In the Giver Jonas has already shown intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom. Jonas shows intelligence by knowing the names of all the colors fairly quickly. “Jonas learned, through the memories the names of the colors. Since Jonas has never seen color before it is amazing that he could learn the memories so quick. Jonas shows great integrity because no matter what the situation is he always thinks if he is doing the right thing or not. When Jonas experienced pain he asked the giver if he could take pills. He shows great courage too when he asks why he didn’t experience any pain yet. “But I haven’t Giver. Not really.” Jonas knows that the pain is awful but is brave enough to ask for it. Jonas is expected to learn courage because one day he will have the memories of the whole community. Jonas has shown wisdom by putting so much thought into his memories. That is how Jonas shows those four traits.

  10. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training. He puts in a lot of effort in his school work, and he is smarter than most kids in his class. He outsmarts adults, such as the Giver. In page 98, it says, "What if they are allowed to chose their own mate? And chose wrong?" Jonas is acting smart, and he challenges the Giver. Also, in page 107, it says, "Giver, he asked one afternoon following a day when he had been sent away, what causes you pain? When the Giver was silent, Jonas continued. The Chief Elder told me, at the beginning, that the receiving of memory causes terrible pain........." He challenges the Giver by asking him questions. Although he probably knows that the giver is tired, and not really in the mood to answer his questions, he still bothers him in a good way, and that can be a way that people can think he is smart. These can be several ways of how Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom.

    1. Isn't saying that people could choose wrong favoring sameness though? That is basically what Jonas and the Giver are against. I think that a way he shows intelligence would be that he understands that he gets over that and understand that making choices is important.

  11. Jonas has already shown intelligence, integrity, and courage, and he is expected to learn wisdom during his training. Jonas is showing courage by always wanting to experience more memories, even some painful ones. This is showing courage from wanting to try new things and step out of his comfort zone. When Jonas looks at the rules for his training as a reciever, he is curious because some of the rules for this training doesnt involve some rules in the community. This evidence shows how Jonas is showing integrity by wondering about the rules and being mature. Jonas doesn’t mention his training to anyone besides the giver because of his rules. This is showing intelligence by not telling anyone about all the new, excited, painful, yet amazing memories. The giver is soon to show Jonas wisdom. I think that the wisdom Jonas will learn is somewhat about the community and the horrible rules. Those are some ways Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, and courage, and is expected to learn wisdom throughout his training.

  12. Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training with the Giver. Jonas has shown courage by being brave...one day when he saw that the Giver was experiencing great pain he offered to take away that pain by taking away the memory. However once the Giver gave Jonas that memory Jonas would have that memory until he gave it to the next receiver. Jonas says to the giver, "...What is it that makes you suffer so much? If you gave some of it to me, maybe your pain would be less." Jonas has shown intelligence...at the ceremony of twelfths the Chief Elder said, "We are all aware that Jonas has been the top student throughout his school days." One way that Jonas has shown integrity is by being honest with the Giver. When Jonas finds out about what the world was like before sameness he is very open with his feelings by saying exactly what he thought of it. The last trait that Jonas has shown is wisdom. One way he has shown wisdom by taking an image or sequence of images and coming up with what the word is without even being told. For example, "Suddenly he perceived the word for it: sunshine. He suddenly perceived that it came from the sky." Those are just a few of the ways that Jonas has shown, intelligence, integrity, courage, and also wisdom throughout his training.

  13. Jonas shows intelligence, courage, integrity and wisdom during his training. One example of Jonas showing intelligence during his training was his ability to quickly learn about colors. "Jonas learned, through the memories the names of the colors." He was also a very good student in school. The chief elder said this at the ceremony of twelve. "We are all aware that Jonas has been the top student throughout his school days." This is another way that Jonas showed intelligence. During his training, Jonas showed courage. When he received the memory of pain he was very scared. He didn't want to go back to the Giver because he was scared of the painful memories that he knew he would receive. Despite this he still went back to the Giver. Jonas showed integrity during his training with the Giver. He always follows the community rules. He is always very careful to never say anything wrong, or break any other rules. One last trait that Jonas shows is wisdom. One example of Jonas showing wisdom was when he received the memory of the happy family at Christmas. He said that the family looked happier and more complete with love. He realized that love was much better than the family feelings that were forced by the community. These are examples of Jonas showing intelligence, courage, integrity, and wisdom during his training.

  14. Jonas has showed intelligence, integrity, wisdom and courage during his training in many ways. He has shown intelligence by asking smart questions and answering the giver’s questions correctly and quickly. “’Well…’ Jonas had to stop and think it through.” “’What if we could hold up things that were bright red, or bright yellow, and he could choose?’” By asking these smart questions, Jonas is showing intelligence and curiosity. “'You receive well, and learn quickly.’” By learning quickly Jonas is also showing intelligence and that he can keep up with the Giver’s tasks and work. Jonas also showed courage throughout his training. He shows courage by receiving the painful memories. “The brutal slice of pain was gone. But the leg still ached horribly, still, and his face felt raw.” Jonas sticks up to the pain and is brave throughout the painful memories. Jonas shows wisdom by knowing what to do and what to say as this process is going on. He is growing smarter and is asking the right questions and learning a lot. Finally, Jonas shows integrity by being curious. He asks questions about rules and always is thinking. He asks questions to the giver about all of the memories, being honest and truthful. In conclusion, Jonas has showed intelligence, courage, wisdom and integrity in many ways throughout his learning experience with the giver.

  15. Jonas displays intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom in his training. He shows intelligence when he asks important questions that have valuable answers. "'But why can't everyone have the memories?...You and I wouldn't have to bear so much by ourselves, if everybody took a part....''But then everyone would be burdened and pained'". By asking these questions, he gets smarter about the topic of memories, which is very essential to his training. Jonas also shows intelligence by perceiving words quickly and accurately. "'You receive well, and learn quickly.'" The young boy displays integrity when he obeys every rule of the training. "That he had this power frightened him. He decided not to tell." Even though Jonas is tempted to discuss the amazing discovery, he knew he shoudn't and made the right choice not to. Jonas shows courage when he faces painful memories of the past, such as sunburn, bone fractures, starvation, and warfare. "Then, the first wave of pain...It was if a hatchet lay lodged in his leg, slicing through each nerve with a hot blade." Despite the torture, Jonas faces his fears and is willing to go through alot to learn about the pain of the past. Jonas shows wisdom by taking part of conversations with The Giver and showing interest in them. "I would be very interested to hear the story of your life, and to listen to your memories." These are ways Jonas displays intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom.

Jonas learned, through the memories the names of the colors. This shows intelligence. Jonas finds out how the real world was before sameness, its almost as if he had developed his own theory about it, this shows wisdom. And finally Jonas shows integrity by being curious. 17. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training with The Giver in multiple ways. One way he has shown intelligence is by finding words and phrases relating to the memories the Giver has given him. “‘Sunshine,’ he said aloud, opening his eyes. ‘Good. You did get the word. That makes my job easier. Not so much explaining.’ ‘And it came from the sky.’ ‘That’s right,’ the old man said. ‘Just the way it used to.’ ‘Before Sameness. Before Climate Control,’ Jonas added. The man laughed. ‘You receive well, and learn quickly. I’m very pleased with you. That’s enough for today, I think. We’re off to a good start.’” This quote shows that Jonas was knowledgeable enough to know what certain items were called even when he had no experience with them. He figured out the connection between his community’s choices and the memory that The Giver showed him very quickly, which means that Jonas is a good thinker. Also, The Giver praised him on thinking of such things, which means that The Giver believes that Jonas has intelligence as well as wisdom. Jonas shows integrity by telling The Giver why he was one minute late for his training, “Finally he simply said, ‘It changed. I don’t know how, or why. That’s why I was one minute late,’ he concluded, and looked questioningly at The Giver.’” Jonas was very honest with The Giver on why he was one minute late and didn’t try to come up with an excuse. He was very direct and didn’t beat around the bush. Courage is something Jonas has a lot of. He is not afraid to feel pain, “‘...What is it that makes you suffer so much? If you gave some of it to me, maybe your pain would be less.’” Jonas is willing to take on the burden of pain so that The Giver will suffer less and because he knows that he is entitled to do so. He is brave to feel anguish and pain because he has very little experience with real emotions and feelings. By asking for pain, Jonas is showing great courage. Jonas is beginning to show hints of wisdom throughout his training. He has the power to think. “‘Back and back and back.’ Jonas repeated the familiar phrase. Sometimes it had seemed humorous to him. Sometimes it had seemed meaningful and important. Now it was ominous. It meant, he knew, that nothing could be changed.” Over time, Jonas has gained wisdom. What he thought of as comical is now sinister. He has thought through a phrase so often that he uncovered the true meaning. Through Jonas’s training with The Giver, Jonas has displayed intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom. These traits are important and will help Jonas in his later life.

  18. There are many ways Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom throughout his training. One way he has shown courage is that he bravely volunteered to take the pain from the Giver when the Giver isn’t feeling well. “Then he hesitated. ‘ Unless maybe there’s something I can do to help.’” One way Jonas has shown intelligence is when he realizes the feeling was sunshine even though he has never heard of or felt it before. “ ‘Sunshine,’ he said aloud, opening his eyes. “Good. You did get the word,’” and, “‘Before Sameness. Before Climate Control,’ Jonas added. The old man laughed. ‘ You receive well, and learn quickly.’” A way Jonas showed wisdom throughout his training is that he realized how dangerous it was for people to make their own decisions and pick their own jobs. He quickly realized that the community would be one full of transgression. The way Jonas showed integrity is when his leg is hurting after the memory of a broken leg, he follows the rules and refuses his parents offer offer of medication and doesn’t tell them the real reasons he looks tired and hurt. These are some of the ways that Jonas has showed the four traits during his training.

  19. There are many ways that Jonas has shown integrity, strength, courage, and intelligence throughout his training. He showed strength when he received the memory of the broken leg on the sled ride. It is true that he was writhing in pain on the bed but he wasn't as dramatic as the normal person would have been. He has shown courage when he volunteered to take the bad memory when the Giver isn't felling good. He showed integrity when after he broke his leg he did not ask for medication. He also knew that that was against the rules to do so anyway. He is intelligent too. When he was picked as receiver the elder said that we al know that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days. Jonas also showed wisdom is when he realized that it would be extremely dangerous if everyone made choices of their own. These are some ways that Jonas showed the five parts of being a receiver.

  20. Jonas has shown strength, intelligence, integrity, and courage throughout his training. Being a top student in school, Jonas is very smart and infers a lot of things. He understands what the Giver is telling very well. When the giver was trying to tell Jonas about color, Jonas was understanding very well for someone in a world who doesn't even know what color is. He shows strength by easily catching the apple he and Asher were playing catch with. Another way is how he handled the sunburn, it was like nothing. The warfare that he learned about was way worse, but he didn't overreact. Jonas shows integrity by not mentioning any of his pain and thoughts to his family members, and not asking for medication for any of the pains throughout his training, even though it was against the rules to do so. Last but not least, courage. There are many things for courage, some have to do with the Giver, the others, with the apple. Jonas risks getting in trouble to take an apple and not eat it (Oh my God!) but instead play catch with Asher just to make his hand-eye coordination better. Another reason is when Jonas, without though at all, like its nothing, going up and saying to the giver that he will take his bad memmories. These are some ways that Jonas has shown that he has the four qualities to be the next reciever is memory.

He shows wisdom quickly in a way the giver is surprised about because it took the giver himself a long time to figure out. He shows intelligence when he quickly learns the names aof of colors shapes and things he has never seen before. The way his courage is shown is when he is very eager to experience something that is told to him to be unfathomably bad ,pain. He shows integrity by asking all of the questions he did that without integrity would be hard to ask. Overall we see that Jonas has intelligence, courage, wisdom, and integrity.

  22. Jonas shows intelligence, courage, integrity, and wisdom during his training. he showed courage by still wanting more memories eager to learn. He showed intelligence by learing quickly. Andthe Giver said 'You receive well, and learn quickly.'" He also learned the memories of colors very quickly, and practiced seeing them. He figured out that what and how the Capacity to see beyond is. HE showed integrity because he believed that it wasn't fair the he And The giver had to burden all the memories of the pain of the world for every body else. He believed that everyone should experience them. I believe that Jonas is still yet to show wisdom. He still needs more experience and memories to gain wisdom. This is how Jonas showed three off the four qualities in his training.

  23. During his training, Jonas shows he has integrity, courage, intelligence, and wisdom.
He shows he has integrity in many ways. One way is by asking so many questions. He is not keeping them inside of him, but he is being honest and telling The Giver if something is confusing him. Another way he shows he has integrity is that he keeps his training private. On page 99, Jonas wants to tell Asher about the colored flowers, but when the transporting of the memory doesn’t work, he says, “‘...I thought for a minute that they were wilting, and we should let the Gardening Crew know they needed more watering.” He was about to tell Asher about color, but knew that he couldn’t tell anyone about his training, so he kept his promise, and didn’t tell Asher about color, showing he has integrity. Jonas also showed he had courage during his training. One way is because he had very hard memories transmitted to him. The Giver gave Jonas a memory of a sunburn and on page 86 it says, “‘It hurt a lot,’ Jonas said, ‘but I’m glad you gave it to me. It was interesting. And now I understand better, what it meant, that there would be pain.’” This shows that although the memory was very painful, Jonas was brave and courageous, and turned it into a lesson of better understanding, which brings me to intelligence. Jonas knows how to take the memories he has received and use them to strengthen him. He used the painful memory of the sunburn to understand what people from the past felt like while experiencing pain. Jonas is also intelligent because he has been learning very quickly and receiving the words for things quickly. On page 85, it says, “The man laughed. ‘You receive well, and learn quickly. I’m very pleased with you...’” It is hard to interpret a lot of new things at once, but Jonas is very smart, and exceeded The Giver’s expectations. Jonas has also shown wisdom during his training. Jonas wanted people like the newchild Gabriel, to be able to make choices on their own. The giver replied, “‘ He might make wrong choices.’” Jonas knew exactly what The Giver meant. He knew that if everybody made their own choices, people could make mistakes and things could go wrong. Jonas knew it was wrong to let people make their own decisions and right to keep letting the Elders make the important decisions of the community. Intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom are all traits Jonas has shown throughout his training.

  24. Jonas has already shown intelligence, integrity, and courage, and he is expected to learn wisdom. Jonas displays each of these four qualities during his training. Jonas showed intelligence during the story when the giver gives him the memory of sunshine. “ ‘Sunshine,’ he said aloud, opening his eyes. ‘Good. You did get the word. That makes my job easier. Not so much explaining.’ ‘And it came from the sky.’ ‘That’s right,’ the old man said. ‘Just the way in used to.’ ‘Before Sameness. Before Climate Control,’ Jonas added. The man laughed. ‘You receive well, and learn quickly. I’m very pleased with you.’ ” This is an example of intelligence, because Jonas is showing that he is smart by repeating a fact that he was told by the Giver. Jonas also showed the quality of integrity. “Jonas stood for a moment beside his bike, startled. it had happened again: The thing that he thought of now as ‘seeing beyond.’ ... Frowning, Jonas walked toward the Annex. I will ask the Giver, he decided.” This shows that Jonas has integrity because he proved that he is honest by telling the Giver what happened. Courage is another quality that Jonas showed. “ ‘Sir.’ he said, ‘The Chief Elder told me--she told everyone--and you told me too, that it would be painful. So I was a little scared. But it didn’t hurt at all. I really enjoyed it.’ He looked quizzically at the old man.” This is a very courageous thing to do because most people wouldn’t have asked , because of being scared about the pain, but Jonas is very brave. The last quality that Jonas displays during his training is wisdom. He shows wisdom when he is telling the Giver about how he can see the color red. “Jonas told him about the experience with the apple. Then the moment on the stage, when he had looked out and seen the same phenomenon in the faces of the crowd. ‘Then today, just now, outside, it happened with my friend Fiona.’ ” Jonas is more knowledgeable than most other people since he has the power to see beyond, and he knows lots about the past. During his training, Jonas displays these qualities.

    1. telling the Giver that he might be able to see beyond does show integrity. I don't think that asking about Jonas feeling pain or not is courageous. Jonas just didn't know about the pain the training would later bring to him.

  25. Many times during Jonas’ training, he shows intelligence, integrity, wisdom, and courage. When Jonas is shown the pain of breaking an arm it hurts him a lot. He doesn't go home and ask his mom or dad for medicine to help him with the pain. He knows that it is the right thing to not take medicine because the rules of being a receiver told him not to take medicine related to training. This shows courage and integrity. "What if they are allowed to chose their own mate? And chose wrong?" Jonas knows that it is a good thing for the citizens to make choices on their own. He also thinks of the bad things of the citizens making choices. This shows his intelligence. He thought of the idea of citizens making choices completely through. Jonas is going to learn wisdom when he receives memories of the past. Jonas shows wisdom, intelligence, integrity, courage.

  26. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom many times throughout his training. One example of when Jonas shows intelligence is when he quickly comes up with the words and phrases that go with the memories the Giver gives Jonas. "'Sunshine.' He said aloud opening his eyes. 'Good, you did get the word.'" This shows that shows that Jonas learns quickly and is smart enough to figure things out without being told, which shows intelligence. One way he shows integrity is when he asks questions. He always asks the Giver whatever questions he has on his mind, no matter how foolish and dumb he'll think they'll be. He's truly honest and by asking these questions, he learns more. One time when Jonas shows courage is when he offers to take away some of the Giver's pain. "I'll com back tomorrow sir," he said quickly, then he hesitated. "Unless maybe there's something I can do to help." Jonas shows courage because he offered to take some of the pain away from the giver and inject it in himself. One time when he shows wisdom is when he learns to understand their community. “‘Back and back and back.’ Jonas repeated the familiar phrase. Sometimes it had seemed humorous to him. Sometimes it had seemed meaningful and important. Now it was ominous. It meant, he knew, that nothing could be changed" Jonas has become more understanding and smart and he has gained plenty of wisdom in a very short amount of time. He has started to understand some of the flaws in the community, which not many people do understand. Honesty, wit, bravery, and prudence are some things Jonas learns through out his training with the Giver.

  27. Jonas is in the process of becoming the receiver, and shows that he has the four traits necessary to be the receiver: intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom. Jonas has always been a top student in school, but that is not the only intelligence that he has. He also shows intelligence when he makes himself use proper language, and when he asks the giver questions. Asking questions is a very important step to gain intelligence, as it lets you better understand what you are confused on, and to make you not be confused. Jonas displays integrity many times throughout his training as well. He is always honest about what his thoughts and feelings are, and is not afraid to submit himself for chastisement. Courage is another of the key traits that Jonas possesses. He is willing to become the receiver even though he is told that it will involve pain. He is willing to bear the painful memories of the past so that others don't have to. The last quality that Jonas must have is wisdom. Wisdom comes in many forms, whether it be in thought, words, or actions, and I believe Jonas is wise in all three. Jonas has the ability to test himself. Testing yourself is a very important part of wisdom. It allows you to ask of yourself difficult tasks to perform, and to assess how you could have done better, therefore causing you to expect the best of yourself before taking action. Jonas is also wise with his actions. He is never rash or inconsiderate when he makes a choice to act upon an issue that he sees. He weighs both the positive aspects and the negative effects that his actions might cause. Jonas' words are also spoken wisely. Others look up to him when he speaks, because he is seen as a leader. The memories that the giver has passed to him influence every word he speaks, because he has enough wisdom to interpret the memories so that they have meaning. Jonas expects of himself only his best, so he is able to do his best when advising others.
These are the characteristics that Jonas possessed and acquired throughout his training.

  28. Many times through Jonas's training Jonas shows the qualities he needs to have in order to be the new receiver, intelligence, integrity, wisdom, and courage. When Jonas was shown the real pain of breaking a leg he is in great pain. Even though he is going threw a lot of pain he knows that he can't get medicine or treatment for his training. This shows courage and integrity. “What if...they choose their own jobs. Jonas is able to think of something that has never happened to him or anybody in a very long time. This shows how intelligent he is because it is very hard to even imagine or think about things that you have never known to be true.Jonas is going to learn wisdom when he receives memories of the past. Jonas shows wisdom, intelligence, integrity, courage throughout his training and his life so far.

  29. Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training. He showed intelligence by being “a top student throughout his school days”. If one was truly a top student, would expect them to be very intelligent. He showed integrity by never telling his parents or friends about his training and never taking medication that involved what he doing with the giver. “ But jonas remembered the rules. No medication for anything related to his training.” He showed courage when the giver gave him the memory of fracturing his leg and said he couldn’t have any medication. He didn’t go crying from the pain, but toughened through it. Finally jonas showed wisdom when he was talking about choices. “‘Not safe?’ The giver suggested. ‘definitely not safe,’ jonas said with certainty. Jonas showed these 4 excellent qualities more than once each, and is bound to show them more.

  30. Jonas shows integrity, wisdom, intelligence and courage in many ways during his training. One way that Jonas shows intelligence is when the give starts a sentence and Jonas finishes it . This shows intelligence because it shows that jonas is catching on very quickly to how the giver thinks. One way Jonas shows integrity is when on the first day of training he sees fiona's hair change and he reports it immediately to the giver instead of keeping it a secret. One way that Jonas shows courage is when the giver is in deep pain because of a memory and Jonas takes that memory away from him and does not get scared because he knows he is doing something good. One way that Jonas shows wisdom is when he thinks that people should make their own decisions and then he realizes that if people made wrong choices then that would not be good. Those are ways jonas displayed integrity, intelligence, wisdom, and courage.

  31. Jonas shows integrity, intelligence, courage and wisdom many times during his training as the receiver. Jonas first shows integrity when he asks questions to answer his questions not to please the instructor or teacher. Jonas also shows a lot of wisdom in his training when he gets the right words from the memories even though he had never seen these things. “‘Sunshine,’ he said aloud, opening his eyes ‘good. you did get the word’” proves that his intelligent. Jonas shows courage many times during his training. for Jonas to ask for pain showed a lot of courage because he did not know what to expect at all. Jonas showed his wisdom the most out of the 4 traits. One time that he shows wisdom is when he receives the memories and handles them well. This how Jonas shows the 4 traits in his training.

  33. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom during his training. “‘We shouldn’t have!’ Jonas said fiercely. The Giver looked startled at the certainty of Jonas reaction. Then he smiled wryly. ‘You’ve come very quickly to that conclusion,’ he said. ‘It took me many years...’” The fact that he comes quickly to a conclusion shows intelligence. He asks a question whenever he has one, no matter how rude it is and that shows integrity. One way he shows courage is when, after painful memories like the one of the second sled or the one of the warfare, he keeps going to training. Another way he shows courage is when he offers the Giver to give him a memory of pain so he feels better, he gets a memory of pain just to help another person. He shows wisdom when he decides to not give Gabriel any memories because he hasn’t been chosen to be the receiver and it’s in the rulebook to not share information about his training, so he makes the right decision to follow the rules. Those are some of the ways in which Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom.

  34. Jonas lives in a very uniform community. The rules are clear and precise and are very strictly enforced. Some of these rules are beneficial and some rules are not.

Rules and customs start at a very early age. New Children are produced by Birth Mothers then cared for by nurturers. The elders then name the New Children and assign them to family units (which are also created by the government). There are never two people in the community with the same name. I think that the women who give birth should be able to keep their babies. The people should also be able to mary who they want and be able to name their own children. “‘ He’s cute but I don’t really like his name,’” Fiona remarks about her new brothers name, Bruno. Another rule relating to families is that one family unit can not have more than two children, and one child is a boy and one is a girl. Familie should be able to have as many kids as they want of any gender: boys may want the company of other boys instead of that of a girl.

The children also have a ceremony each year. When you turn a certain age you get something (a haircut or coat for instance) that represents a new right or responsibility. For example, at age eight, children get a jacket with pockets, signifying that they are ready for taking care of their own possessions. In my opinion this is a good idea, though not absolutely necessary. This is a way children learn qualities that are important in life.

Like in our world, children go to school. Unlike in our schools, Jonas’s schools have very specific standards. For example a game of catch is “a required activity for Asher” because his “hand-eye coordination was not up to standard.” This rule is hard to judge. It is definitely the right idea, although having required activities may not be the best way to improve the lacking skills. In Jonas’s community precision of speech is very important. In fact, when children used the wrong words they were beaten. Correcting children is definitely right, but doing it physically is incorrect.

Another ritual that is different from our own is the Evening Telling of feelings. It is a good idea, although it should be encouraged but not required, as it may make people feel uncomfortable. The telling of dreams may also be uncomfortable because there are some dreams you would rather keep to yourself.

Yet another rule is to take pills for your “stirring”, or affection. This is definitely wrong because it takes away a vital part of a persons life.

The last rule I’ll discuss is the Assignment. The Elders give out the people’s assignment. Although they almost always make a good choice, people should be able to make their own choices about their future. The Elders could recommend a job, but not assign your career.

  35. To become a Receiver Jonas needs to show three vital characteristics: intelligence, integrity and courage. Using these character traits, Jonas is expected to learn wisdom. At the ceremonies the chief elder explains these traits.

“‘Intelligence,’ she said. We have all been aware that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school days.”

She then talks about Jonas’s integrity. “Jonas has, like all of us committed minor transgressions...” and he was always been honest and presented himself for chastisement.

She says that he needs courage because his training will require pain. Then a quality that she could “only name but not describe.” the ‘Capacity to See Beyond.’ During his training he continues to expand these qualities and fully realizes their importances. In Jonas’s training manual it says that he is allowed to lie and is exempted from the rules of rudeness. Even though he could, Jonas did not take advantage of this rule, showing further integrity. Jonas is also quick to learn (as the Giver himself remarks). “You learn fast and receive well.”

Courage: Jonas is told that his training will require pain. He asks the giver for a painful memory, because he is curious and wants to know what to expect. This ties directly to wisdom. even though it hurt Jonas was able to learn something from it. “‘It hurts a lot.’ Jonas said. “but I’m glad you gave it to me. It was interesting.’” And what is wisdom? People may have varying opinions, but I think it is the ability to learn something from an experience, and Jonas was able to do just that. Jonas was picked by the Committee of elders to be a receiver because of these qualities. Jonas proved himself to be worthy and the Committee chose well.

  36. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom in his training sessions with The Giver. Jonas shows intelligence by learning quickly. This shows intelligence because if you can learn faster, you can accomplish and learn more things. He has integrity by being honest all the time with The Giver. When he asks where the pain would be, that shows courage. This is because most people would’ve not asked and would of have to find out themselves. (the hard way). When you learn the ways of something, or for this example it would be learning what and what not to do for being the receiver of memory, you become wise. Becoming full of wisdom is a very important skill because 1.) you need it to become the receiver and 2.) it’s a helpful life skill. This is how Jonas is intelligent, integrous, courageous and wise in his training sessions with The Giver.

Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, and courage, and soon wisdom. He has shown intelligence and wisdom during training by instantly placing a word from a memory. "Suddenly he perceived the word for it: 'sunshine'. he perceived that it came from the sky." this shows that he knew the word "sunshine" right away without any help from The Giver. Jonas shows integrity not telling his friends, no matter how much he wants to, about his training. He shows courage by asking The Giver for painful memories as well as pleasant ones. "'The Chief Elder told me- she told everyone- and you told me, too, that it would be painful.'" This shows that Jonas is not afraid of the painful memories. That is how Jonas has intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom.

  39. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom during his training through multiple ways.
Firstly, he shows intelligence by speaking to the Giver with precision in language. For example in Pg. 75, it read,”’After a moment, Jonas went on, "But I thought--I mean I think," he corrected, reminding himself that if precision of language were ever to be important, it was certainly important now, in the presence of this man, "that you are the Receiver of Memory. I'm only, well, I was only assigned, I mean selected, yesterday. I'm not anything at all. Not yet." This shows that he is smart and knows what form of the the word ‘thought’ he needed to use in his sentence.
Secondly, he shows integrity by keep on saying sorry for his mistakes even though the Giver does not reply and he does not need to for he is exempted from the rule of rudeness. For example, on Pg. 75 it said,”’Sir, I apologize for my lack of understanding..... ‘ He waited, but the man did not give the standard accepting-of apology response.” Also, on Pg. 77 it was written,“’I apologize for interrupting,’ he added quickly.” He is respectful to the elderly and kind.
Thirdly, he shows courage by asking the give him the pain even though he knew it would hurt. On Pg. 85, it said,”There was a question bothering Jonas. "Sir," he said, "The Chief Elder told me--she told everyone--and you told me, too, that it would be painful. So I was a little scared. But it didn't hurt at all. I really enjoyed it." He looked quizzically at the old man. The man sighed. "I started you with memories of pleasure. My previous failure gave me the wisdom to do that." He took a few deep breaths. "Jonas," he said, "it will be painful. But it need not be painful yet."
"I'm brave. I really am." Jonas sat up a little straighter.” He shows that he was willing to face pain, to get the memory of pain that was burdening the Giver.
Finally, he shows wisdom through his training by learning new things from the Giver, of true pain, fun and happiness. On Pg. 78, it said, "’It's as if ... ‘ The man paused, seeming to search his mind for the right words of description. ‘It's like going downhill through deep snow on a sled,’ he said, finally. ‘At first it's exhilarating: the speed;the sharp, clear air; but then the snow accumulates, builds up on the runners, and you slow, you have to push hard to keep going, and--.’” At first, Jonas does not know what a hill, snow, and sled is. But as he gets memories of those things, he gets wiser and gets to know what they are. On Pg. 81, it says,”Beyond, through the swirl of what he now, somehow, perceived was the thing the old man had spoken of-- snow...” Also, on Pg. 81, it states,”Sled, he knew abruptly. He was sitting on a thing called sled. And the sled itself seemed to be poised at the top of a long, extended mound that rose from the very land where he was. Even as he thought the word "mound," his new consciousness told him hill.”
These are all the ways in which Jonas showed intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout hi training.

  40. Jonas has shown intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom throughout his training. One example of how Jonas showed intelligence from the book is “We are aware that Jonas has been a top student throughout his school day.” Being a top student means that Jones was the most intelligent person in his class. Another example is about when Jones showed wisdom he has shown wisdom by taking an image, picture or a group of images and inventing a word that suits that image. For example in the book it said, “Suddenly he perceived the word for it: sunshine. He suddenly perceived that it came from the sky.” Which shows that Jones uses visual clues to help him create a word. Jonas also showed courage when The Giver was in pain. Jonas offered to take the memories that caused The Giver pain even though he knew that it would hurt, he most likely did this because he knew that he had to take on new responsibilities as the Receiver of Memory. A quote from the book proving my statement is ‘“What is it that makes you suffer so much? If you gave some of it to me, maybe your pain would be less.’” This also shows that Jonas cares about other people. Also Jonas shows integrity throughout the book, Jonas has committed transgressions he has always been really honest about everything that he has done, and owned up to everything. Which saves him from being embarrassed. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage and wisdom throughout the book.

  41. Jonas has shown intelligence, courage, integrity and wisdom in his training with the Giver.

One way Jonas showed intelligence was by receiving memories very well. For example, on the sled ride he understood everything that was happening around him, like what the sled was, what runners were and what snow was without really knowing it. Another time Jonas showed intelligence was when he recognized the word “Sunshine”. “The man laughed. “you receive well, and learn quickly. I'm very pleased with you.” One way Jonas has shown integrity be following the rules, even though he really wanted to tell his friends what he does in his training, and he knows that he is in pain and needs medication but he knows he cannot take any. Another way Jonas shows integrity is by being honest and telling the Giver when he is confused or worried. Jonas also showed courage during his training and that is shown on pages 85-86 when Jonas is asking the Giver about the pain he will experience. “The Chief Elder told me-she told everyone-and you told me too, that it will be painful, so i was scared but it didn’t hurt at all. I really enjoyed it.” This shows courage because it shows that Jonas wants to know about the pain that will come and not hide from it. The last trait that Jonas showed was wisdom. Jonas shows wisdom by making wise choices, for example, going back to the rules he is supposed to follow, he makes smart choices and uses good judgment when he was in pain and when he lies to his family it is all because of his wisdom. That is how Jonas showed all four traits in his training.

  42. Jonas shows intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training with The Giver. He has shown intelligence by understanding the new words and phrases given to him through memories. On page 85, paragraph 3 and 4, it said, “Suddenly he perceived the word for it: sunshine. He perceived that it came from the sky. Then it ended. ‘Sunshine,’ he said aloud, opening his eyes. I’m very pleased with you.” Jonas was able to perceive the word quickly, and learn it, thus showing that he is intelligente. Jonas also shows integrity, when he was distracted by Fiona’s hair, he was late by a minute, and honestly said why he was late, he didn’t make an excuse, but instead he truthfully told The Giver why he was late. On page 92, paragraph 1, it said, “‘It changed. I don’t know how, or why. That’s why I was one minute late,’ he concluded, and looked questioningly at The Giver.” He was very honest with The Giver, and came straight to the point, and was very clear. Jonas shows courage by willing to take on the burden of pain that tortures The Giver. Even though he knew that it would be painful, he was brave and courageous enough to be willing to take on the pain. On page 107, paragraph 4, it said, “What is it that makes you suffer so much? If you gave some of it to me, maybe your pain would be less.’” Jonas shows courage by willing to take on the pain, though, it is very painful. Jonas has gained wisdom throughout his training. He realizes that it’s not all happy memories, but there were memories of warfare, starvation, poverty, loss, etc. It showed him a whole new light and understanding. This is how Jonas showed intelligence, integrity, courage, and wisdom throughout his training with The Giver.
